Health care for all?

Jun 2, 2017

The California Senate has approved a measure which will establish a single-payer (state-run) health care system in an attempt to dramatically overhaul the market in wake of the looming Obamacare repeal.

Sacramento Bee's TARYN LUNA: "The California Senate approved a measure Thursday aimed at establishing a government-run universal health care system in the Golden State."

"
The system, which would replace Obamacare – or what follows it under the Trump administration – would dramatically overhaul the health care market in California. Approved on a 23-14 vote, it now moves to the Assembly."

"With President Trump’s promise to abandon the Affordable Care Act as we know it, it leaves millions without access to care and Californians are once again tasked to lead,” said Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens. “Senate Bill 562 will finally enable California to cover all of its residents, creating a healthier and stronger state."

Sacramento Bee's CHRISTOPHER CADELAGO: "Legislation to end daylight saving time in California easily overcame a key hurdle on Thursday as the state Assembly advanced the controversial measure."

"
Assembly Bill 807, which would ask statewide voters to repeal the 1949 initiative establishing daylight saving time in California, passed the lower chamber on a 48-6 vote. It moves to the state Senate for consideration."

"
The measure by Assemblyman Kansen Chu would allow the Legislature to adjust it with a two-thirds vote – whether that be switching the dates it takes effect, getting rid of it altogether or, should the federal government authorize it, moving to daylight saving time on a year-round basis."

Jerry Brown and other rank-and-file politicians were unanimous in their dissent over President Trump's withdrawal of the U.S. from the Paris climate accord.

Sacramento Bee's CHRISTOPHER CADELAGO: "California Gov. Jerry Brown savaged President Donald Trump’s decision Thursday to vacate the Paris climate accord as “insane” and “deviant” as he joined with like-minded governors to form alliance to uphold the agreement and pursue immediate action on climate change."

“Donald Trump has absolutely chosen the wrong course. California’s economy and America’s economy are boosted by following the Paris agreement,” Brown said on a conference call after Trump’s withdrawal from a pact with nearly 200 counties, putting the U.S. in the company of Syria and Nicaragua."

"
California will resist because his effort is misguided,” Brown added in the call with reporters. “I would even say this is an insane move.”

In immigration news, Trump is revisiting SCOTUS in an attempt to get his travel ban put into affect

WaPo's ROBERT BARNES/ANN E. MARIMOW: "The Trump administration on Thursday asked the Supreme Court to let it move forward with the president's plan to temporarily ban citizens from six mostly Muslim countries, elevating a divisive legal battle involving national security and religious discrimination to the nation's highest court."

"
Department of Justice lawyers asked the court to overturn a decision of the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit that kept in place a freeze on President Donald Trump's revised ban."

"The 10-3 ruling last week was one in a series of legal defeats for the administration, as judges across the country have said Trump's claim of protecting the nation was cover for making good on a campaign promise to ban Muslims from entry into the United States."

Hundreds of firefighter promotions at CalFire will be able to move forward, pending individual vetting, in the wake of a cheating issue that emerged in an advancement exam. (Ed's Note: This Roundup headline was CORRECTED to delete reference to hundreds of firefighters suspected of cheating.)

Sacramento Bee's ADAM ASHTON: "Almost 300 state firefighters whose promotions were suspended after Cal Fire discovered suspected cheating on a November 2016 exam can move up the ranks as long their individual results are vetted one more time, according to a Thursday decision from the State Personnel Board."

"The board voted to allow Cal Fire to promote from an exam that it dismissed last month when it reported that it found “irregularities” on a test that captains must pass before advancing to battalion chief. Cal Fire’s decision meant 289 captains who passed the test would have to retake it this summer before moving up the ranks."

"
Their union, Cal Fire Local 2881, on Thursday asked the personnel board to uphold the promotion list, arguing that only one promotion candidate allegedly cheated on the test."
