SF mayor misses the mark

May 31, 2017

A recently released poll shows that San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has the same approval rating as President Trump

The Chronicle's MATIER & ROSS: "Despite efforts to revitalize his administration, Mayor Ed Lee remains stuck in the ratings basement — with just 38 percent of San Francisco voters approving of his job performance, according to a new poll."

"The poll found 49 percent of those surveyed disapproved of Lee’s performance, with the rest not sure."

"The Public Policy Polling survey of 561 registered San Francisco voters was conducted May 26-27, and came up with pretty much the same finding as a Chamber of Commerce poll last year that had the business-friendly mayor’s approval ratings in the low 40s. Lee’s support spiked to 49 percent in a chamber poll in February, after the inaguration of President Trump, but it has since fallen again."

Sacrameno's downtown convention center will be getting a long-slated remodeling
.

Sacramento Bee's ANITA CHABRIA: "The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday approved a scaled-back renovation of the convention center, choosing to save money for a second, undetermined project intended to draw tourists and conventioneers to the city."

“It’s a big night,” Mayor Darrell Steinberg said Tuesday afternoon in anticipation of the vote. “From the very beginning my belief has been that it would be a missed opportunity to put all of our money in a single asset to increase tourism and hotel demand."

"The more modest remodel of the aging convention center on J Street, between 13th and 15th streets, will include new east and west lobbies, a kitchen and a community plaza with an outdoor amphitheater between the convention building and the neighboring Community Center Theater."

Planned Parenthood has chosen to soon close down three Northern California clinics.

Sacramento Bee's SAMMY CAIOLA: "Planned Parenthood will close three clinics in Northern California at the end of June to consolidate dwindling financial resources, the organization confirmed Tuesday."

"Locations in Vacaville, Pittsburg and central Richmond will close June 30, according to Miriam Gerace, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Northern California. The affiliate organization serves 100,000 people a year at 23 health care sites across 20 counties in Northern California, from San Francisco to Del Norte County. The national organization has faced major defunding threats since President Donald Trump’s election, and could lose federal funding under the proposed American Health Care Act."

"In California, clinics have been struggling for years with low reimbursement rates from the state Medi-Cal program, Gerace said. Because Planned Parenthood provides reproductive health and general health care to many uninsured and publicly insured patients, the organization has found it hard to meet the need for services, she said."

Southwest Airlines is experimenting with having multiple exit doors on their airplanes that arrive in Sacramento.

Sacramento Bee's ED FLETCHER: "Passengers flying Southwest Airlines into Sacramento won’t have an easier time getting away, but they will have an easier time getting off the plane thanks to a new experiment in dual-door deplaning."

"On a select number of flights landing at Sacramento International Airport, customers can choose to depart through the forward door as usual or through the back door via stairs down to the tarmac, the company said Tuesday."

"That experiment “has proven successful in improving both on time performance as well as the customer experience,” said Michelle Agnew, a spokeswoman for the company."

Pro-conservative organization California Family Council is picking a bone with Assembly Republican Leader Chad Mayes over his recently posted gay rights tweet.

Sacramento Bee's ALEXEI KOSEFF: "A tweet posted earlier this month by the California Assembly Republican Caucus for Harvey Milk Day has upset some social conservatives that see the message as a betrayal of the state party and their place within it."

"Representatives from the California Family Council, a Fresno-based organization that aims to “protect and foster Judeo-Christian principles in California’s laws, for the benefit of its families,” visited the Capitol on Tuesday to meet with members of the caucus about their position on the tweet."

"It’s important for socially conservative voters to know where they stand,” CEO Jonathan Keller said. “If they don’t stand by their promises, I worry that many of the people that I speak with, many of the people that contacted us over this issue, are not going to vote Republican in the next election."

Trump is expected to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate accord, an agreement between nearly 200 nations that vows to aggressively fight climate change.

AP: "A White House official says President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord."

"But the official says there may be "caveats in the language" that Trump uses to announce the withdrawal — leaving open the possibility that the decision isn't final."

"The official insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the decision before the official announcement."

A union representing 'rank-and-file deputies' has requested that its police department fully disclose its use of force statistics.

LA Times' MAYA LAU: "After an oversight group pushed the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department last week to be more transparent about how often deputies use force and how often they’re punished, the union representing rank-and-file deputies says it wants the department to go even further."

"In a letter sent Tuesday to Sheriff Jim McDonnell, the Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs says the department should reveal how many times deputies could have lawfully used force but refrained from doing so, as well as how many times deputies are assaulted or handle suspects who resist arrest or disobey orders."

"The additional data would give “proper context” for deputies’ use of force, ALADS President Det. Ron Hernandez wrote in the letter, which was copied to the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors."

Immigrants rights activists say that the ICE hardline against immigrants will also continue to sweep up legal citizens.

The Press-Enterprise's ALEJANDRA MOLINA: "Immigrant rights activists worry that President Donald Trump’s hard stance against illegal immigration could increasingly threaten the rights of legal permanent residents and even United States citizens."

"Days after a San Bernardino woman said she was detained by immigration authorities for deportation despite being an American citizen, organizers are urging undocumented immigrants, lawful permanent residents, and U.S. citizens to carry any form of identification at all times and to assert their rights if confronted by immigration authorities."

"It is alarming,” said Jennaya Dunlap, with the Inland Coalition of Immigrant Justice. “It looks like we’re going back to a time of racial profiling and mass criminalization of the immigrant community whether or not they have status."
