Newsom releases tax returns

Gavin Newsom has released his tax returns as he prepares for his gubernatorial run.

 

LA Times' PHIL WILLON/MICHAEL FINNEGAN: "In his first five years as California’s lieutenant governor, Gavin Newsom made more than $4 million from his wineries, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality businesses."


"And that’s on top of his government salary, which is $142,577 a year."


"The former mayor of San Francisco is the first candidate in the 2018 race for governor to release his state and federal tax returns. He filed jointly with his wife, the actress and filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom. On Monday, Newsom allowed reporters to review — but not photocopy — six years of the couple’s returns, from 2010 to 2015, at the San Francisco offices of his campaign consultants, SCN Strategies."

Kremlingate heats up on the Beltway as Sally Yates testifies under oath that Michael Flynn was susceptible to blackmail and that "you don't want the Russians to have leverage over the national security advisor."

 

LA Times' DAVID S. CLOUD: "Former acting Atty. Gen. Sally Yates testified Monday for the first time that she warned White House lawyers at least twice in January that President Trump’s national security advisor at the time, Michael Flynn, “could be blackmailed” by Moscow, may have violated criminal statutes and had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his dealings with Russian officials."


“We believed that Gen. Flynn was compromised,” Yates, a career prosecutor, told a Senate Judiciary subcommittee investigating Russia’s role in the 2016 election."

 

“To state the obvious, you don’t want your national security advisor compromised with the Russians,” she said. “You don’t want the Russians to have leverage over the national security advisor.”

A bus-operator strike in Antelope Valley continued to disrupt service Monday as employees continue to strike over their pay, benefits and policies.

 

LA Times: "Local bus service in Lancaster and Palmdale was canceled and commuter routes were cut back Monday as Antelope Valley bus operators entered the sixth day of a strike over salaries, benefits and disciplinary policies with the private firm that pays them."


"The strike is the third in less than two months for the 120 operators who drive the Antelope Valley Transit Authority’s fleet of buses but who are employed by Transdev, a French company that provides drivers for dozens of U.S. transportation agencies."

 

"The strike has created a headache for riders in the Antelope Valley who depend on buses to get to work, school and medical appointments."

A teen in San Diego involved in a suicide by cop death last weekend left a note behind.

 

LA Times' KAREN KUCHER: "The 15-year-old boy who was killed by police officers early Saturday morning after he pointed a BB gun at them had left a suicide note, San Diego police Lt. Mike Holden said Monday."


"The teen, a freshman at Torrey Pines High School, was fatally shot near the front of the Carmel Valley campus after someone called 911 around 3:30 a.m. and asked police to check on a boy at the school."

 

"Officers later determined the boy had made the call himself."

Refugees are pouring into Sacramento by the hundreds despite Trump's move to reduce the influx of refugees.

 

Sacramento Bee's RYAN LILLIS: "The Sacramento region is bucking President Donald Trump’s moves to cut back the flow of international refugees entering the United States."


"The region is experiencing a mini-boom of refugees resettling here, even as the number of refugees admitted into the U.S. overall plummets, according to a Sacramento Bee analysis of data kept by the national Refugee Processing Center."


"A total of 466 refugees from around the globe have resettled in the Sacramento metropolitan area so far this year, a 20 percent increase over the same period last year. The number to date is also bigger than in any year under former President Barack Obama."
