The friendly skies?

As it turns out, United Airlines' violent removal of an older man last week wasn't an isolated event.

LA Times' DAVID LAZARUS: "Far be it from me to tell United Airlines how it should run its business."

"But judging from the hundreds of emails, tweets and social media posts I’ve gotten in response to my column on a first-class passenger being threatened with handcuffs — this is separate from the doctor-dragging incident — I feel comfortable in suggesting that this company needs to make some changes, and fast."

"This first story I’ll share isn’t such a big deal in the grand scheme of things. But it’s perhaps illustrative of the corporate mindset at United, which seems to place customer satisfaction well below the interests of employees and shareholders, which isn’t very smart over the long haul."

Chicken is starting to make a comeback on school lunch menus after a hiatus.

LA Times' HOWARD BLUME: "For more than a year, one of the foods Los Angeles students like best has been all but absent from school menus."

"Last month, high school students, with two entree choices at lunch, were offered an oven-baked drumstick on the 24th — but that was it for chicken."

"Los Angeles Unified School District had been budgeting up to $20 million on chicken a year. Then its school board set new standards for how suppliers should treat their poultry, their workers and the environment. Contract talks with Tyson Foods and Pilgrim’s Pride, the nation’s largest two suppliers, fell apart in 2015."

Syrian president Assad is facing continual mounting international pressure to step down as he pushes back against claims of gassing his own people, accusing America of being complicit with the rebels in his country.

LA Times' PATRICK J. MCDONNELL: "From his shop window, looking out on the storied Umayyad mosque and the remains of a 2,000-year-old Roman bath complex, Joseph Havera was contemplating what he considered a nightmare scenario: A U.S.-led assault on the Syrian capital, stronghold of President Bashar Assad."

“Why would the United States attack Syria? I don’t understand it,” Havera, an august merchant of textiles, antiquities and other Syrian handicrafts, said from his musty second-floor aerie, up a series of narrow stairways that wind past sundry craftsmen’s workshops."

A man assaulted by a Sacramento cop initially goaded the officer and has a history of resisting arrest.

Sacramento Bee's NASHELLY CHAVEZ/PABLO LOPEZ: "A man whose videotaped beating by a Sacramento police officer went viral on social media this week has a history of allegedly disobeying officers, challenging them to fight and resisting arrest, court records and police logs show."

"Nania Cain Jr., 24, was the man caught on video walking away from an officer who was trying to stop him for allegedly jaywalking in the Del Paso Heights neighborhood, police said. After ignoring the officer’s commands to stop, Cain could be heard on a dashboard camera video challenging the officer to fight."

"I don’t have nothing,” Cain tells the officer as he takes off his shirt or jacket, apparently to show he was unarmed. “If you were a real man, you could take your gun away and you could fight me like a real man."

Vaccine rates have spiked after lawmakers required children wihout exemptions to receive vaccinations.

Sacramento Bee's TARYN LUNA: "School vaccination rates are the highest in California in more than 15 years after the Legislature toughened requirements."

"A new report by the California Department of Public Health found that 95.6 percent of kindergartners in the current school year completed vaccination requirements."

"I am pleased that this first year of the implementation of SB 277 has resulted in the significant rise of the vaccination rate of this year’s kindergarten class,” said Dr. Richard Pan, D-Sacramento, who authored the bill. “This success is a first step toward reducing the number of unimmunized people putting our families at risk for preventable diseases, thereby restoring community immunity throughout our state in the coming years."

Rep. Adam Schiff is one of California's figureheads in the Trump climate of America.

McClatchyDC's SEAN COCKERHAM: "Rep. Adam Schiff, seemingly so mild-mannered and calm, is emerging as the unlikely face of Congress’ fiercest opposition to President Donald Trump."

"His role as the Democratic Party’s most visible investigator in the probe of President Donald Trump’s Russia ties puts him squarely in a spotlight that could make him a political star for years to come."

"But it’s also stamping the California Democrat as sharply partisan, a label he’s worked for years to avoid."
